In my coaching practice, I have met a lot of amazing people. Everyone's situation is different, but some themes run true for many. The Six Rules is a short manifesto of what running themes are important to consciously create a career, and life, that matters.
Here are Six Principles of Creating a Conscious Life & Career
#1: We All Get a Permission Slip
Many people are spending their precious time in the waiting room. Waiting to be promoted, approved, validated - even loved. We look for something, or someone, out there to tell us that we are OK, that we are allowed to do things differently, and that it's OK to stop doing the things we don’t care about.
We don’t need to wait for someone else's permission - all the approval we will ever need is already within us. Let's step up and take the space we deserve.
“Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.” - Marianne Williamson
#2: We Care About Truth
We all really do know what is true for us. What it is that we are not doing or saying. What it is that we really care about, where is it that we’re holding ourselves back.
When we start shedding expectations that we, or society, might have on us, our truth becomes clearer. The stories we have been telling ourselves to be true, we realize, are not.
If we have suppressed the part of us that is telling us what to do, it can be difficult to hear. But we learn to listen by looking inwards; meditation, taking breaks, learning to follow your inner calling.
"The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off." - Gloria Steinem
#3: We Know Our Strengths
We are all brilliant, and we are so in very different ways. When we identify, sharpen and master our strengths, magic happens. We learn to be OK with not putting all efforts into perfecting our imperfections.
When we build on our strengths, we have more fun, we experience flow, we contribute more and better. This is also how we attract people with complementing skill sets into our lives. And yes, we are all amazing at something.
“Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it’s stupid. - Albert Einstein
#4: We Take Imperfect Action
We realize that we cannot know what is true, or grow in our pursuits, unless we move. Putting ourselves out there is scary. We grow, learn and expand by testing new waters.
We apply a growth mindset and embrace the opportunities where we can be a beginner again. Look for those experiences that equally excite you, and scare you. Chase the goosebump factor; the experiences or ideas that give you goosebumps because it moves or excites you. We go for these experiences; this is where the juice is.
"Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction." - Harry Truman
#5: We Build Our Platform
Imagine that your life and career is a platform. This platform is made up of our strengths, interests and values. On this platform, we stack experiences, trials and errors and connections. This is how we solidify the platform. Jobs come and go, even careers come and go, but our platform of who we are remains.
The era of career climbing is over. Instead, we consciously build our platform.
#6: We Contribute Beyond Ourselves
We accept and embrace the fact that we are all co-creators of the world we live in. We know that world change starts with personal leadership, and take responsibility for the fact that what we do has an actual impact in the world.
When we realize that we can change our world, we start operating from a place of power. Our truth, our imperfect actions, spoken from our platform, is how we live a conscious and powerful life.
